Our story

A little flame, a whole room's scent

A ceramic oil diffuser is a simple, lovely thing: a glazed bowl sits above a small hollow where a tea light burns, and the gentle heat releases the scent of the oil in the bowl into the room. It needs no electricity and no noise — just a flame and a few drops of oil. Azulejo works with Portuguese ceramicists who throw and glaze each lamp by hand, so every piece carries the craft of the studio. Light the candle, add the oil, and let a room fill with its quiet scent.

How it's made

Each lamp is thrown by hand from clay and glazed in the studio, then fired so the glaze is smooth and lasting. It is shaped with a hollow for a tea light and a bowl above for the oil, made to sit quietly and warm.

How to use it

Fill the bowl with a little water, add a few drops of oil, and light a tea light beneath. The gentle heat releases the scent into the room. Blow out the flame when you leave and let the lamp cool.

Good to know

Why glazed ceramic?

The glaze gives the lamp a smooth, lasting surface that is easy to wipe clean and catches the light beautifully. It is the traditional material of the Portuguese studios that make them.

How long does a tea light last?

A standard tea light burns for a few hours — plenty for an evening's scent. Blow it out when you are done and let the lamp cool.

Is it safe to use?

It is designed for a tea light, which is small and low. As with any flame, place it on a heat-safe surface, keep it away from edges and drafts, and blow it out before you leave the room.

What oil should I use?

A few drops of a natural diffuser oil in a little water in the bowl is all it needs. Use any oil you enjoy the scent of.

Is it made by hand?

Yes — each lamp is thrown by hand from clay and glazed in a Portuguese studio, then fired so the glaze is smooth and lasting. No two are quite identical.

How does it work?

A tea light burns in the hollow below the bowl, and its gentle heat warms the oil and water in the bowl above, releasing the scent into the room. It is quiet, simple and needs no electricity.
